Onward.
Hi there,
Happy Monday!
š Something to Read:
As I work with educators across the country, many share that they are struggling to build strong classroom communities in the face of challenging behaviors. Itās important to remember that we are serving peopleās childrenāeach one deserving care, connection, and a space where they feel valued. The more we listen and connect with students, the better our chances of creating environments where they can thrive, which leads to higher levels of learning and engagement. But the real question is, how do we make this happen? I am encouraged by the continuum of Restorative Practices in schools.
Here is an example of how one of our team members found success when implementing circles in her learning environment.
š Something to Listen to:
Have you ever wondered if it makes sense to implement UDL in the classroom when standardized tests donāt offer the same options to students?
If so, you are not alone. And while we canāt control the design of standardized tests, we can control how we prepare our students for them to ensure that students are equipped to handle whatever comes their way.
In the latest episode of The Education Table, I outline 6 actionable strategies to help prepare students for standardized tests. Tune in to Episode 13 wherever you listen to your podcasts.
šŗ Something to Watch:
Our words have a lasting impact, and thatās something we all need to be reminded of, over and over again. I absolutely looooove this visual presentation given by elementary teacher Ms. Natalie Ringold. I triple dog dare you to watch it and not smile.
š ļø Something to Do:
This week, I encourage you to ask at least one of these questions to the people you serveāwhether itās students or staff. These questions, inspired by an article on the shifts in the UDL guidelines by the amazing Mirko Chardin, are a simple but powerful way to build deeper connections:
What are the 3 most important things I should know about you?
Who are the most important people in your life?
What inspires you?
How do you learn best?
What are three things youāre really good at?
How can I best keep you safe?
š Something to Make You Think:
John Hattieās research consistently identifies collective teacher efficacy as the top factor influencing student achievement. Simply put, to make a significant impact on student learning, fostering collective teacher efficacy is key.
One effective strategy is to encourage educators to observe each other. Mirko Chardin and Chris Bronke share two ungated protocols that you can use right away...plus they share 5 more strategies for building trust and collaboration amongst teams. Check them out here.
š Something just for fun!
My babies are back to school. Cheers to grade 10, 8 (the twins!), and 4! And for a fun trivia question, "Who plays lacrosse?" The answer is, "ALL of them!"
